Rivers Crisis: Five Pro-Wike Commissioners Resign From Fubara’s Cabinet

By: Barikui Felix, Port Harcourt

As the face-off between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike and his political son and governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara continue to rage, five commissioners in the cabinet of the governor loyal to the FCT minister have resigned.

Those who resigned are; Dr Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Housing, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Education, Austen Ben-Chioma, Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Jacobson Nbina, Commissioner for Transport and Mrs Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation.

All the commissioners who resigned simultaneously on Wednesday, cited the political crisis and sharp division amongst cabinet members as reason for the exit.

Their resignation followed earlier resignation of Commissioners for Works, Dr Dax Alabo Goerge-Kelly who is now the Executive Secretary of Boarder Communities Development Authority, BCDA, Special Duties, Engr. Emeka Woke now appointed Managing Director of Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zacheaus Adangor.

The former cabinet members all pledged their loyalty to the FCT Minister.

All the commissioners who resigned are those who left the cabinet later part of 2023 at the peak of the crisis between Wike and Fubara but were reappointed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened.

Recall that Governor Fubara during the week had said that some of his commissioners are sabotaging his government’s efforts.

It is believed that now that they are all out of his cabinet, the governor can now freely administer the state.
