Rivers Crisis: Forgive me, at Due Time I Will Correct My Mistake, Wike Apologizes

By Nelson Chidiebere

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike, has apologized to his supporters for choosing Governor Siminialayi Fubara as the governorship candidate in the 2023 general election, promising to correct the mistake in due time.

Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, made the statement on Saturday at St. Martin’s Church Field in Ogu town, Ogu/Bolo LGA, during a grand civic reception in honor of Senator George Thompson Sekibo.

The event was to celebrate Sekibo’s 20 years of meritorious service at the National Assembly and 36 years of his life in public service.

Referencing the political crisis in the state, Wike assured his loyalists that despite the political maneuvering and clandestine efforts to procure court injunctions by the Governor’s camp, the law would take its full course.

He urged them not to be frightened, saying, “I have no other work than to make them angry every day. They will continue to make mistakes every day and keep being in trouble every day.”

Wike also reacted to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s assertion that he was not going to worship any man, clarifying that he had never told anybody to worship him.

According to him: “I have never told anybody to worship me. Nobody can worship man. We all believe in one God, and it is only that God we will worship and continue to worship.”

He, however, emphasized the importance of gratitude, saying, “Since God passes through people to lift people, it is through the appreciation of the beneficiaries to their benefactor that God will feel appreciated.”

The former governor also acknowledged that he is not a pushover, saying, “I came because I respect people who appreciate what God has done for them, who appreciate what God used people to do for them. God does not come down to help people; God uses people to help people. So when you have been helped and you appreciate them, then God will know that you have appreciated Him.”

Wike apologized for his mistake, saying, “I have made a mistake, and I have said, ‘God forgive me,’ and all of you forgive me, but we will correct it in the appropriate time. I am a human being, and I am bound to make mistakes. My judgment might be wrong, so forgive me.”

He reassured his loyalists, “Nobody should kill himself. Let me say it clearly, Arnold, do not be frightened that anybody will remove you as an Assembly member. Most of you do not understand; this is our work. We follow due process, and we will not arm anybody to fight for us.”
